La chiesa di San Domenico, intitolata originariamente a San Martino, si trova all’interno del centro storico di Gubbio, più precisamente nella parte nord-ovest del centro storico nel quartiere San Martino. Di fronte alla chiesa si trova la piazza Giordano Bruno.
Della costruzione della chiesa si ha notizia dal XI secolo. La chiesa si sviluppa in prossimità di quelle che anticamente era il complesso di cinta muraria a protezione della città. Solo verso la metà del XV secolo fu possibile ampliare la chiesa preesistente, erigendo oltre le vecchie mura civiche l’attuale presbiterio.
Recenti restauri hanno riportato alla luce affreschi trecenteschi e della scuola del Nelli. Una bella pietà in terracotta del 1400 e un leggio finemente intarsiato sono conservati all’interno della chiesa. Lo stile gotico dell’altare maggiore viene datato verso la prima metà del ‘300, mentre la mensa d’altare è precedente e risale al 1134. L’archivio e la ricca biblioteca del convento sono stati recentemente riorganizzati.
