Nel 1527, all’indomani del sacco di Roma, il Papa Clemente VII si rifugiò ad Orvieto.

Per approvvigionare d’acqua la rocca dell’Albornoz, in caso di assedio o conflitto, fu edificato il pozzo di San Patrizio, su progetto di Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane. Terminato nel 1537, il pozzo è profondo circa 62 metri e, al suo interno, sono state realizzate due scalinate a doppia elica sovrapposte, così progettate per rendere più agevole il trasporto dell’acqua.
