Manfricoli), spettacoli teatrali e musica.

Amelia (TR), located between the Amerini hills and surrounded by the ancient and imposing Roman walls, annually hosts the Palio dei Colombi (Palio of the Pigeons), in 2012 from July 28th to August 12th, an equestrian joust truly unique and fascinating.

The borgo is divided into five “Contrade” (Districts): Collis; Crux; Burgi; Posterola; Platea; Vallis. Each contrada will line up on the field a horse, a knight and a crossbowman, and individually challenge their rivals in the order dictated by the ranking of the previous year.
Start the knights, with spear, which run through the competition area (a ring of about 90 meters) with the aim of hitting a small target. If successful, are two points. At the end of the round the crossbowmen shoot an arrow at a target attached to a dovecot, tthat in case of center opens releasing, in fact, a pigeon. And it is an additional point for the associated district and rider. However, sometimes the dovecot can be opened even by the power of the shot, without having made a perfect center. In this case, there is a “lines judge” who will verify the validity of the shot.

The Race of the 2012 Palio dei Colombi, Sunday, August 12th, 2012 starting at 20:00 at the Campo dei Giochi is fast, and the knights dart close to one another, at one meter. The best Contrada, and the related knight-crossbowman given by the sum of the 10 cross-challenges, at the end of the “championship” will win the Palio, a cloth of fabric painted for the occasion.

The night before the Palio, Saturday 11th, from 21:00 there will be the Corteo Storico with more than 400 participants of the Contrade, with accurately reproduced garments. The parade will depart from the Contrade for then meet in Piazza XXI Settembre, where at the arrival of the Podestà (a chief magistrate or governor during the Middle Ages in Italy, similar to an actual Mayor), scheduled at 22:00, will be closed the monumental gateway of the city, in front of which occurs the swearing and the consign of the keys, just as they did in ancient times when the Podestà came from Rome to administer Amelia.

During the two weeks of the feast you can try the typical Umbrian dishes of the taverns of the Contrade (eg Manfricoli), theatre and music.
