L’antica cittadina di origini romane di Bevagna è collocata al margine occidentale della piana di Foligno, ai piedi del gruppo collinare dove sorge Montefalco, presso l’ ansa del fiume Timia.
L’aspetto odierno è sicuramente il frutto dello sviluppo medioevale, infatti benchè i Romani avessero impostato l’antica Menania in modo tale che la via Flaminia fosse il decumano della cittadina, oggi il baricentro urbano è posto più a sud.
Bevagna fa parte dei Borghi più belli d’Italia ed ha fatto da cornice ad alcune importanti produzioni cinematografiche, tra cui ricordiamo alcune scene del celebre film del 1972 di Franco Zeffirelli Fratello Sole, Sorella Luna. Inoltre, nel 2007 ha fatto da location d’eccezione alla stagione 6 della fiction televisiva Don Matteo.

A spasso nel borgo
Sono assolutamente da non perdere in Piazza Silvestri il Palazzo Gotico dei Consoli, posto singolarmente in obliquo rispetto agli assi viari, la Chiesa di San Silvestro (1195 d. C.) e la Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo. La fontana che completa la scenografia di questo eccezionale spazio pubblico è invece un rifacimento di epoca ottocentesca.
Le porte medioevali della cittadina sono ancora oggi molto ben conservate, anche in seguito ad interventi ricostruttivi come quello del 1797 su Porta San Venanzo e lunghi tratti dell’ antica cerchia di mura.
Non mancano, inoltre, testimonianze delle origini più antiche di Bevagna: i resti di un tempio del II secolo d.C. sul quale fu successivamente eretta la Chiesa medioevale della Madonna della Neve, il teatro romano (II secolo d.C.) che rimane a far da fondamenta ad un isolato circolare lungo il corso dell’antica Flaminia e i notevoli resti di mosaici appartenenti forse ad un edificio termale che rappresentano animali marini.
Fra le più importanti manifestazioni che sono organizzate nella città merita senza dubbio una nota particolare la rievocazione storica del Il Mercato delle Gaite, manifestazione e rievocazione storica medievale che si tiene ogni anno generalmente nel mese di Giugno.

Bevagna, Perugia: come arrivare
Bevagna si trova nel circondario folignate, ad appena 10 km dalla città di Foligno. Provenendo da Perugia, si può dunque arrivare agevolmente in circa 30-40 minuti di macchina.
Per chi proviene da Roma, è possibile prendere la superstrada E 45 fino all’uscita di Massa Martana, per poi proseguire per circa 35 km su strada di campagna, oppure raggiungere Terni e da lì proseguire lungo la strada che passa per Spoleto. Bevagna dista da Spoleto circa 30 km.
Bevagna non dispone di stazione ferroviaria. Per chi viaggia in treno, è necessario giungere a Foligno (ben collegata con Perugia, Terni, Orte e Roma, ma anche con le Marche utilizzando la tratta ferroviaria che proviene da Ancona) e poi utilizzare un autobus locale.

Its modern-day appearance is surely the result of its developement during the Middle Ages. In fact, even if the Roman had constructed the ancient Menania in such a way that the Flaminia Road was the decuman axis of the town, the town’s center is now placed more to the South. In Piazza Silvestri, you absolutely should not miss the Gothic Palace of the Consuls, situated singularly slantwise to the streets, amd the Churches of St. Sylvester (1195 d.C.) and St. Michael Arcangel; the fountain which completes the scene of this exceptional public area is, however, an adaptation dating back to the 19th century. Even today, the medieval town portals, even after reconstructive measures such as those of the Porta San Venanzo in 1797, and long stretches of the old town walls, are in a good state of preservation.

L’antique petite ville aux origines roamaines de Bevagna est située aux confins occidentaux de la plaine de Foligno, aux pieds du groupe de collines où surgit Montefalco, près du coude du fleuve Timia.
L’aspect actuel est assurément le fruit du développement médiéval ; en effet, bien que les Romains aient pensé l’antique Menania de façon à ce que la voie Flaminia en soit le décuman, aujourd’hui le baricentre urbain est situé plus au sud. Il ne faut absolument pas rater sur la Place « Silvestri » le palais gothique des Consoli, singulièrement placé de manière oblique par rapport aux axes des voies et aux églises de Saint Silvestre (1195 après Jésus-Christ) et de Saint Michel Archange; la fontaine qui complète la scénographie de cet exceptionnel espace public est en revanche du XIXème siècle.
Aujourd’hui encore les portes médiévales de la ville sont bien conservées, suite également à des interventions de reconstructions comme celle datant de 1797 sur la Porte San Venanzo et de longs morceaux de l’antique ceinture de murailles.
En outre, les témoignages des plus antiques origines de Bevagna ne manquent pas: les restes d’un temple du IIème siècle après Jésus-Christ sur lequel fût successivement construite une église médiévale de la Madonne de la Neige, le théâtre romain (IIème siècle après Jésus-Christ) qui est le fondement d’un campement circulaire le long de l’antique voie Flaminia et les remarquables restes de mosaïques appartenant peut-être à un édifice thermale qui représentent des animaux marins.
Parmi les manisfestations les plus importantes qui sont organisèes dans la villes, il faut sans aucun doute citer l’évocation historique du The Market of the Gaite of Bevagna.

Die alte Stadt Bevagna(ursprünglich Mevania in der römischen Zeit) liegt nicht weit von Foligno, im selben Tal, auf den Abhängen des Hügels von Montefalco, bei dem Fluss Timia.
Das moderne Aussehen der Stadt ist Ergebnis der mittelelterlichen Architektur, obwohl die Hauptstrasse noch dem Römischen Decumano und der Strasse Via Flaminia entspricht, befindet sich das Stadtzentrum heute im Süden dieser Strasse. Unbedingt sehenswert sind der Platz Silvestri, der gotische Konsulpalast, die Kirchen San Silvestro (Baujahr 1195) und San Michele Arcangelo.
Der Brunnen auf dem selben Platz ist dagegen eine Kopie von 19. Jh. Gut bewahrt bleiben noch heute die Stadttore, obwohl teils zusammen mit Teilen der Stadtmauer (bei Portas an Venanzo z. B.) 1797 restauriert.
Zeugnisse der römischen Stadt Mevania sind außerdem einfach zu finden: Überreste eines Tempels, auf denen später die mittelalterliche Kirche Madonna della Neve aufgebaut wurde, und des Römischen Theaters (2. Jh. n.Chr.) in den Stadtmauern, bei der Strasse Flaminia.
