Vallo di Nera, medieval fortified borgo on top of a hill in the Valnerina, hosts every year Fior di Cacio: Profumi e Sapori d’Umbria (Fragrances & Flavors of Umbria), the event dedicated to the cheese and all the dairy products, particularly numerous and “excellent” as the ricotta salata stagionata (seasoned ricotta salata), of the south-eastern Green Heart of Italy.

2013 Fior di Cacio will take place on Saturday 8th & Sunday, June 9th between tastings and display of various types of “cacio” in the cellars of the village, combined with other dishes and / or local products. But the Festival will be a real journey back in time to rediscover the folklore, traditions and life of the “cheese-makers”, thanks also to the guided tours of the sentieri della transumanza (paths of transhumance, cattle trails, migratory herding) up to the ocean-going grazing lands of the mountains surrounding the area of Vallo di Nera. And to conferences, demonstrations, courses and competitions on the cheese planet and its processing.

In addition, exhibitions, guided tours of the town’s monuments, stornellatori (folk singers) and artists in the streets and plays for kids.
Not to mention “La disfida del Ruzzolone” (“The duel of the Ruzzolone“) of Sunday, June 9th, 2013 at about 17:30. The Ruzzolone (literally tumble, fall) is a traditional game tied to the paths of transhumance (it was also used to wash the offenses, ed) that once was carried out with the ruzziche, or ruzzole (wheel), of seasoned pecorino. Today, the ruzzolone is a discus of hardwood with a variable diameter according to the regulations adopted, usually by 26 cm. You can play single player or team, and within a predetermined path, without leaving it out, you have to launch the “wheel”, through a tape, as far as possible.
