Soprattutto nel periodo natalizio, quanto sul versante della montagna appaiono le luci dell&#8217;ormai celebre\u00a0<strong><a>Albero di Natale pi\u00f9 grande al mondo<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0che costituisce una delle immagini\u00a0pi\u00f9 simboliche dell&#8217;Umbria e del centro Italia in generale.<\/p>\n<p>Ma se salire il monte per passeggiare tra le luminarie, nel cuore stesso dell&#8217;albero, \u00e8 certamente un&#8217;esperienza emozionante, lo \u00e8 altrettanto <strong>varcare la soglia della Basilica<\/strong>. Il portale d&#8217;accesso all&#8217;intero complesso ci porta in un ampio <strong>chiostro<\/strong> <strong>in<\/strong> <strong>laterizi<\/strong>, con arcate e volte nelle cui lunette si trovano i resti di<strong> affreschi cinquecenteschi<\/strong>. I pilastri accanto all&#8217;ingresso della chiesa hanno un basamento in marmo, con alcuni dipinti raffiguranti gli stemmi dei Montefeltro, del comune di Gubbio e il Cristogramma.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"\"><img class=\"\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Si accede invece alla chiesa attraverso cinque porte. Di particolare pregio sono le tre porte centrali in <strong>pietra serena<\/strong> scolpita, che presentano ancora\u00a0 i battenti originali in <strong>legno intagliato<\/strong>. L&#8217;interno della chiesa \u00e8 a sua volta suddiviso in cinque navate. Predomina alla vista la visione dell&#8217;<strong>altare maggiore<\/strong> realizzato nel 1884, in <strong>stile neogotico<\/strong> con decorazioni in finto mosaico. Se alzate lo sguardo una volta entrati, al di sopra dell&#8217;altare noterete le otto piccole statue raffiguranti <strong>santi legati alla citt\u00e0<\/strong>. Al di sopra, \u00e8 posta <strong>l&#8217;urna<\/strong> in cui \u00e8 custodito il corpo intatto di sant&#8217;Ubaldo.<\/p>\n<p>Le belle vetrate presenti nella chiesa raffigurano racconti legati alla vita stessa del santo, oltre a regalare a tutto l&#8217;ambiente un&#8217;illuminazione ottima. La <strong>prima domenica di maggio<\/strong>, i ceri vengono trasportati e trasferiti in citt\u00e0 per venire esposti nel <strong>Palazzo dei Consoli\u00a0<\/strong>prima della festa. Tornano in basilica il <strong>15 Maggio\u00a0<\/strong>stesso, quando vengono portati a spalla dai &#8220;ceraioli&#8221; durante la celebre competizione.
