{"id":194005,"date":"2022-08-12T17:50:18","date_gmt":"2022-08-12T15:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bellaumbria.net\/orvieto-cathedral\/"},"modified":"2023-06-07T12:33:11","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T10:33:11","slug":"orvieto-dome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bellaumbria.net\/en\/religion-spirituality\/orvieto-dome","title":{"rendered":"Orvieto Cathedral"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"display: none;\">\n<p><strong>Il Duomo di Orvieto<\/strong> \u00e8 una delle cattedrali pi\u00f9 belle d&#8217;Italia, <strong>capolavoro dell&#8217;architettura gotic<\/strong>a dell&#8217;Italia centrale.<\/p>\n<p>La magnifica costruzione <strong>domina la rup<\/strong>e sulla quale si colloca la citt\u00e0 di Orvieto grazie all&#8217;imponenza dell&#8217;edificio, la cui costruzione richiese circa tre secoli di lavori e vide avvicendarsi decine di esperti e artisti. In particolare, celebre in tutto il mondo \u00e8 la <strong>magnificenza della sua facciata<\/strong>, che si slancia verso l&#8217;alto con le sue torri fino a raggiungere un&#8217;altezza di circa 53 metri. Non da meno <strong>l&#8217;interno della cattedrale con decori e sopratutto affreschi<\/strong> dei pi\u00f9 grandi pittori italiani dell&#8217;epoca, tra cui il noto <em>Giudizio Universale<\/em> di Luca Signorelli, opera di grande pregio e bellezza.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andiamo dunque alla scoperta<\/strong> della storia e dei tesori del Duomo di Orvieto, vero e proprio simbolo della citt\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"\"><img class=\"\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>La Storia del Duomo di Orvieto<\/h2>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Dal &#8220;Miracolo del Sangue&#8221; all&#8217;avvio dei lavori<\/h3>\n<p><strong>La costruzione del Duomo<\/strong> fu voluta da Papa Urbano IV nel 1290, allo scopo di dare una degna collocazione al Corporale del <strong>&#8220;Miracolo del Sangue&#8221;, avvenuto a Bolsena<\/strong> qualche anno prima. Si narra infatti che nel 1263, durante una celebrazione eucaristica tenuta nella chiesa di <em>Santa Cristina<\/em>, nella vicina cittadina, l&#8217;ostia consacrata avrebbe sanguinato. Il sangue cadde cos\u00ec sul corporale ma il sacerdote, un prete boero spaventato e confuso dal fatto, cerc\u00f2 di nasconderlo. Una volta conclusa la celebrazione, avvolse quindi l&#8217;ostia nel corporale per spostarla nella sagrestia, facendo cadere alcune gocce di sangue anche sui gradini dell&#8217;altare e sul pavimento.<\/p>\n<p>Informata la curia romana, il pontefice invi\u00f2 a Bolsena il vescovo di Orvieto per verificare il racconto e recuperare la reliquia. Attestata la soprannaturalit\u00e0 dell&#8217;evento, la <strong>solennit\u00e0 del Corpus Domini<\/strong> fu estesa a tutta la Chiesa per ricordare quello che divenne noto col nome di &#8220;Miracolo del Sangue&#8221; e per celebrare la reale presenza di Cristo nell&#8217;eucarestia.<\/p>\n<p>Si decise quindi di procedere con l&#8217;<strong>edificazione del Duomo per custodire il corporale<\/strong>, l&#8217;ostia e i purificatoi. Le reliquie si trovano ancora oggi protette nella cattedrale, esposte nella Cappella del Corporale all&#8217;interno del <strong>preziosissimo Reliquiario del Corporale,<\/strong> capolavoro di arte gotica italiana ed europea.<\/p>\n<p>Ogni anno, il tabernacolo con il sacro lino viene <strong>portato in processione in occasione del Corpus Domini<\/strong>, durante la tradizionale sfilata in corteo storico. La piazza cittadina ospitava infatti due chiese pi\u00f9 piccole che versavano all&#8217;epoca in condizioni precarie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Il progetto iniziale del Duomo<\/strong> prevedeva la costruzione di una basilica romanica, con una navata centrale e due laterali. Il progetto fu modificato in corso d&#8217;opera quando a Giovanni di Uguccione subentr\u00f2 alla guida dei lavori <strong>Fra Bevignate<\/strong>, che si orient\u00f2 verso lo stile gotico italiano. Inoltre ulteriori modifiche furono approntate nel 1309 dall&#8217;architetto senese <strong>Lorenzo Maitani<\/strong>, chiamato a risolvere alcuni problemi strutturali legati alle capacit\u00e0 di carico dell&#8217;edificio. Maitani riform\u00f2 in particolare l&#8217;abside, che assunse una forma rettangolare, e si occup\u00f2 nel 1330 di realizzare la parte inferiore della facciata.<\/p>\n<p>Alla sua morte, gli successe come capomastro prima l&#8217;architetto <strong>Andrea Pisano<\/strong>, gi\u00e0 a capo dei lavori di costruzione della Cattedrale di Firenze, e poi nel 1359 <strong>Andrea di Cione detto l&#8217;Orcagna<\/strong>. Nel complesso, lavorarono alla sua realizzazione circa 20 diversi artisti nel corso dei secoli. Eppure, la facciata risulta essere <strong>armoniosa<\/strong> e si presenta in modo <strong>uniforme nello stile<\/strong>, grazie soprattutto al rispetto delle forme gotiche iniziali che conferiscono un delicato equilibrio al tutto.<\/p>\n<p>Se la parte inferiore \u00e8 caratterizzata soprattutto dai bellissimi <strong>bassoriliev<\/strong>i che decorano i 4 piloni, tra gli esempi pi\u00f9 mirabili di scultura gotica italiana ed europea, la parte superiore \u00e8 dominato dal <strong>rosone<\/strong> e dai suoi accessori. Tutta la facciata \u00e8 poi arricchita da <strong>preziosi mosaic<\/strong>i realizzati sopratutto nel XIV secolo e ancora fino agli inizi del XIV secolo, per poi essere comunque restaurati e spesso perdendo le forme originarie. Le pareti e i pilastri della navata centrale sono realizzati attraverso l&#8217;alternanza di fasce di basalto e travertino, che riprende la decorazione laterale esterna. Le pareti delle navate laterali, in origine vuote, sono state prima ricoperte da affreschi cinquecenteschi e poi dipinte a fine Ottocento con le attuali fasce bianche e verdi scuro.<\/p>\n<p>All&#8217;interno del Duomo, \u00e8 possibile ammirare <strong>le due preziose Cappelle<\/strong> che si aprono sul transetto. Gran parte degli arredi della cattedrale, dalle statue ai monili, sono invece custoditi all&#8217;interno delle sale espositive del <strong>Museo dell&#8217;Opera del Duomo.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>La Cappella di San Brizio<\/h4>\n<p>La\u00a0<a>Cappella di San Brizio<\/a>\u00a0spicca per l&#8217;importanza dei cicli pittorici in essa custoditi,\u00a0dove gli artisti Fr\u00e0 Giovanni da Fiesole Beato Angelico, Benozzo Gozzoli, il Perugino ed a partire dal 1499 d.C. Luca Signorelli, realizzarono affreschi dedicati al <em>Giudizio Universale<\/em> ed ai regni celesti dell&#8217;Inferno e del Paradiso. Do not to forget the <strong>interior of the Dome, with wonderful decorations and frescoes<\/strong> made by some of the most great painters of the past, among which the famous Giudizio Universale of Luca Signorelli.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s go to discover the<strong> history and the treasures of the Dome of Orvieto<\/strong>, a real symbol of the city.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"\"><img class=\"\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The History of the Dome of Orvieto<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>From the &#8220;Miracle of Blood&#8221; to the construction of the Dome<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pope Urbano IV wanted to <strong>build the Dome in 1290<\/strong>, for giving a suitable collocation to the Holy linen of the <strong>&#8220;Miracle of Blood&#8221;, happened some years before in Bolsena.<\/strong> In 1263, during the Eucharist moment of a Holy Mass in the Church of Saint Cristina of Bolsena, the Holy Host bled. The blood fell on the linen but the priest, scared and confused, tried to hide it. Finished the celebration, he rolled up the Host inside the Holy linen to bring it to the sacristy. Going there, some drops of blood fell on the steps of the Altar and the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Informed about it, the Pope sent to Bolsena the Bishop of Orvieto to verify the fact and take care of the Holy Relics. The Roman Curia confirmed the miracle and decided to extend the <strong>Celebrations of Corpus Domini<\/strong> all around its churches to remember the so-called &#8220;Miracle of Blood&#8221; and to celebrate the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.<\/p>\n<p>Then, the Pope decided to <strong>build the Dome to safeguard the Holy Relics<\/strong>. They are located in the <em>Cappella del Corporale<\/em> of the Dome, inside the <strong>precious <em>Reliquario del Corporale<\/em><\/strong>, a masterpiece of the Italian and European gothic art.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, in occasion of Corpus Domini, the habitants of Orvieto bring with them the Holy Relics during the traditional Procession and the historical reenactment. In the main square of the city there were two smaller churches that were in a bad state at that time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Initially,<\/strong> the project designed a Romanesque Cathedral, with a central nave and two lateral naves. When <strong>Fra Bevignate<\/strong> became chief of the works after Giovanni di Uguccione, he modified the project to introduce a gothic style. In addition, in 1309 the architecte <strong>Lorenzo Maitani<\/strong> from Siena were called to resolve some structural problems of the building. He modified the apse in a rectangular form and in 1330 realized the inferior part of the facade.<\/p>\n<p>At his death, the chief of the work was <strong>Andrea Pisano<\/strong>, who had worked also to the construction of che Cathedral of Florence, and then <strong>Andrea di Cione called l&#8217;Orcagna<\/strong>. The works of the facede proceed with him, who realized the beautiful mosaic and the rose window, and then with the other chiefs among which\u00a0<strong>Michele Sanmicheli e Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"\"><img title=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What to see inside the Dome of Orvieto<\/h2>\n<h3>\u00a0The facade of the Dome<\/h3>\n<p>The visitor&#8217;s attention is immediately drawn by the wonderful <a>Gothic facing<\/a>, on which one notes a polyptych decoration of mosaic works and bas-reliefs .<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"\"><img title=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Inside the Dome of Orvieto<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The three naves<\/strong>\u00a0of the interior of the Dome, large and bright spaces, are covered by a celling of wood truss. Walls and pillars of the central nave are realized by the alternance of basalt and travertine, that refers to the exterior decoration. The walls of the lateral naves, originally empty, were recovered by frescos and then painted with white and dark green strips at the end of XIX century.<\/p>\n<p>The large part of the furnitures, from the statues to the Holy objects, are kept in the Opera Museum of the Dome. Luca Signorelli. Inside, some chapels are structured with cross vaults, some of which embellished by very important frescos painted by Fr\u00e0 Giovanni from Fiesole and by Luca Signorelli.
