Nella travagliata storia della\u00a0Cappella di San Brizio<\/strong>\u00a0sono transitati alcuni dei migliori artisti italiani del XV secolo. Nel 1447 era stato chiamato il Beato Angelico, i cui lavori per\u00f2 andarano un po’ troppo a rilento.\u00a0Fu quindi affiancato da giovani artisti, tra i quali Benozzo Gozzoli, ma anche con questo i rapporti si interruppero nel giro di pochi mesi. Nel 1500 fu finalmente raggiunto un accordo con Luca Signorelli.
\nCostruita tra il 1406 e il 1444, la cappella si apre sul braccio destro del transetto del\u00a0Duomo di Orvieto<\/a>, laddove prima vi erano la sagrestia ed una cappellina semicilindrica appartenente alla famiglia dei Monaldeschi. Sorge in corrispondenza della cappella del SS. Corporale, precedentemente eretta nel 1350 per custodire la reliquia del miracolo di Bolsena. Due dei quattro spicchi delle volte e le decorazioni dei costoloni e delle fasce laterali sono stati eseguiti dal Beato Angelico, affiancato da Benozzo Gozzoli e Pietro di Nicola Baroni. Luca Signorelli complet\u00f2 l’opera, lavorando cinque anni, dal 1499 al 1504.<\/p>\n

La Cappella di San Brizio, o Cappella Nova, fu realizzata in un’epoca di profondi mutamenti sia artistici che politici. Ad un periodo di mutamento politico, con il lento e simbolico passaggio del potere da Firenze al papato Romano, si stava per affiancare il rinnovamento estetico. \u00c8 a cavallo di due epoche, quindi, che si colloca il lavoro di Luca Signorelli, che nacque a Cortona nel 1445. Fu allievo di Piero della Francesca e si afferm\u00f2 per la sua bravura, ma anche per l’uso della prospettiva e l’attenzione per l’anatomia tipica dell’artista rinascimentale. Proprio ad Orvieto ha compiuto l’opera che l’ha reso celebre. Si tratta del ciclo di affreschi dedicati al tema dell’Apocalisse e del Giudizio Universale: le “Storie dell’Anticristo”, il “Finimondo”, la “Resurrezione della carne”, i “Dannati”, gli “Eletti”, il “Paradiso” e “L’Inferno”.
\nNel 1579 vi fu collocata all’interno della cappella una statua marmorea, della Piet\u00e0 dello Scalza, oggi non pi\u00f9 presente, mentre solo nel 1622 la cappella prese il nome di San Brizio, quando vi fu portata l’antica pala d’altare con l’effige della Madonna della Tavola o di S. Brizio, un’opera realizzata tra XIII e XIV secolo.<\/p>\n

I lavori di abbellimento e arredo non erano ancora terminati. Nel Settecento venne creato l’altare della Gloria, opera tardo-barocca di Bernardino Cametti che prese il posto del tabernacolo dell’Assunta. Nello stesso periodo venne collocato nella cappella il sepolcro del Cardinal Nuzzi, anche questo successivamente rimosso, si provvide al riassetto della Cappella della Maddalena. Dalla met\u00e0 del XIX secolo si sono succeduti numerosi interventi di restauro che sono culminati, in questi ultimi anni, nella creazione di un nuovo sistema di illuminazione diffusa dal basso.<\/p>\n
