Sul colle sorgevano vari edifici di propriet\u00e0 della famiglia Baglioni che vennero rasi al suolo, assieme alle case dell&#8217;attinente <em>Borgo di Santa Giuliana,<\/em> per farne materiali da costruzione. Gli edifici che invece ricadevano nell&#8217;area corrispondente al perimetro della fortezza vennero inglobati e ricoperti da ampie e possenti volte, andando a costituirne il piano interrato.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellaumbria.net\/it\/generale\/attachment\/rocca-paolina-interno\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-61188\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Rocca Paolina - Interno\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bellaumbria.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Rocca-Paolina-Interno.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"590\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>La costruzione<\/strong> dell&#8217;imponente Rocca deturp\u00f2 inevitabilmente il profilo urbanistico di Perugia, citt\u00e0 che all&#8217;epoca era descritta come tra le pi\u00f9 belle d&#8217;Italia grazie alle sue oltre sessanta torri, la cerchia di mura etrusche, i palazzi signorili e le cattedrali. Grande merito dell&#8217;architetto Antonio da Sangallo fu comunque quello di aver salvato <strong>Porta Marzia<\/strong>,\u00a0\u00a0portale etrusco che venne fatto smontare e poi ricomporre incassato nelle mura del bastione di levante della Rocca, per decorarne un ingresso.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vero e proprio <strong>simbolo del potere pontificio<\/strong> che domin\u00f2 a Perugia per pi\u00f9 di tre secoli, la Rocca Paolina fu fortemente osteggiata dai perugini e parzialmente distrutta una prima volta nel corso delle rivolte del 1848. Ricostruita nel 1860 per volont\u00e0 di papa Pio IX, fu poi sistematicamente abbattuta man mano nei decenni successivi all&#8217;Unit\u00e0 d&#8217;Italia. Solo dopo gli anni &#8217;30 iniziarono dei lavori di rimozione delle macerie e di ristrutturazione di quanto rimasto, in particolare i sotterranei e parte delle mura. Infine, nel 1965, quella <strong>&#8220;citt\u00e0 sotterranea&#8221; di innegabile fascino<\/strong> venne infine restituita ai cittadini.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellaumbria.net\/it\/storia-e-archeologia\/la-rocca-paolina\/attachment\/perugia_rocca-paolina_interno-rid\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-75909\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-75909\" title=\"Perugia_Rocca Paolina_interno.rid\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bellaumbria.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Perugia_Rocca-Paolina_interno.rid_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"590\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Cosa Vedere nella Rocca Paolina<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>L&#8217;antica fortezza<\/strong> si articolava in tre aree: <em>il Palazzo Papale, il Corridore e la Tenaglia<\/em>, che furono per\u00f2 demolite e sostituite da palazzi, tra cui l&#8217;attuale <em>Palazzo della Pronvincia<\/em>, e dai <strong>giardini<\/strong> nati sulle fondamenta medievali preesistenti alla rocca stessa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dimenticati per decenni, <strong>i sotterranei della Rocca<\/strong> vennero infine riportati alla luce ed \u00e8 oggi possibile esplorare il cuore stesso della fortezza, con il suo susseguirsi di antiche viuzze e sale tipiche della Perugia Medievale. Oltre ai quartieri antichi ed i vicoli, si possono ammirare ancora la<em> Sala delle Guardie Papali<\/em>, la casa della <em>Famiglia Baglioni<\/em> e, prima di uscire nella parte inferiore della Rocca, i resti in pietra dell&#8217;antico <em>&#8220;Giuoco del Pallone&#8221;,<\/em> uno stadio di legno dove veniva praticato tale gioco. Gli spazi della Rocca costituiscono una ricchezza culturale di enorme valore e sono stati riqualificati a <em>Centro Espositivo<\/em>; qui vengono infatti ospitate mostre e attivit\u00e0 culturali che ne esaltano ancora di pi\u00f9 il fascino. Risalendo dal parcheggio si cammina tra piccoli negozi, esposizioni e un sito archeologico con i resti delle antiche case che sorgevano nell&#8217;area, per un vero e proprio tuffo nel passato.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Da ricordare poi l&#8217;<strong>antica Porta Marzia<\/strong>, la porta etrusca risalente al III secolo a.C. scampata alla distruzione, ancora oggi visibile. Ne rimangono in particolare l&#8217;arco a tutto sesto e il coronamento: ai lati dell&#8217;arco, due pilastri corinzi chiudono il coronamento formato da una sorta di loggia, sostenuto da pilastrini corinzi\u00a0tra i quali sporgono tre mezze figure virili (Giove e i Dioscuri) e all&#8217;estremit\u00e0 due protomi di cavalli.
