Grazie alla sua imponente presenza e alla vista dall\u2019alto che garantiva, rappresentava un punto di osservazione e difesa strategico.<\/p>\n<p>Il grandioso edificio fu <strong>voluto da Federico II di Svevia<\/strong> nel XII secolo per dislocare le proprie truppe, attraverso gli interventi dell\u2019architetto senese<em> Lorenzo Maitani<\/em> e di <em>Frate Elia Coppi da Cortona,<\/em> progettista fra l&#8217;altro anche della prima Basilica del Santo ad Assisi. Il complesso fu <strong>sviluppato a partire dalle rovine di una precedente fortificazione<\/strong>, distrutta nel 1901 da Enrico IV di Franconia durante le guerre tra Arezzo e Perugia. La precedente costruzione era nata sui resti di un edificio pi\u00f9 antico dedicato al culto dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo, di cui rimangono pochi ruderi, a sua volta eretto su di un\u2019antichissima acropoli etrusca.<\/p>\n<p>Dopo alterne vicende, <strong>nel 1503 Giampaolo Baglioni vi stabil\u00ec la propria residenza e dispose il restauro e l\u2019ampliamento<\/strong> dell\u2019intero complesso. Il progetto \u00e8 comunemente attribuito a <em>Vignola,<\/em> anche se i lavori proseguirono in modo efficace grazie all\u2019<strong>intervento di Ascanio della Corgna<\/strong>, <strong>esperto in architettura militare.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fu innalzato un <em>tratto di mura<\/em> che dal Palazzo giungeva in prossimit\u00e0 del Mastio, tutt\u2019ora in parte visibile; nel <em>Mastio<\/em> venne inserito un sistema di accesso tramite scale di legno mobili, che potevano essere ritirate in caso di attacco; <em>due torri<\/em> furono sostituite con bastioni cilindrici, la cui struttura rotonda garantiva maggior resistenza gli attacchi di cannoni.<\/p>\n<p>Gli interventi di fortificazione furono ultimati nella seconda <strong>met\u00e0 del 1500<\/strong> e resero la Rocca nota in tutta Europa come <strong>uno dei Castelli pi\u00f9 imponenti e pi\u00f9 difficili da attaccare dell\u2019epoca.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Successivamente, a partire dai precedenti edifici trecenteschi, <strong>fu restaurato ed ampliato il Palazzo Ducale,<\/strong> il gi\u00e0 citato <em>Palazzo della Corgna<\/em>, oggi sede del Municipio.
