If this kind of visits are of interest, also follow the ad hoc underground routes that are offered during special occasions, such as speleological visits organized annually by the CAI or other local associations.

We offer you some suggestions on archaeological and architectural sites that will allow you to descend into the bowels of the city throughout the year: let’s discover them together.

The Rocca Paolina, underground city

The first place we recommend is undoubtedly the imposing Rocca Paolina, the central hub of the city itself. Although it is almost an obligatory stop, since it constitutes a very important transit and connection node between the center and the outermost districts, few really stop by in this unique place, rich in history and mystery. Thanks to the escalator system that has been built inside, in a few minutes you can reach the historic center: for this reason you tend to cross the fortress while heading elsewhere, distracted and often quickly.

Let’s stop instead in this place: it is a real underground city, which in the past was an imposing fortress and had many rooms. After a troubled history, much of the ancient building has been lost but the underground part still remains today, completely restored and freely accessible.

Walking in the Rocca is a very special experience because you cross squares and alleys, as well as being able to enter some rooms whose past functions have been reconstructed by historians and archaeologists: the room of the Papal Guards, some rooms that made up the house of the Baglioni family, the remains of an ancient stadium where the Perugians practiced the game of the ball.

To deepen its history and find out in detail what to see, we refer you to our article dedicated to the Rocca Paolina.

In the basement of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo

Another underground place to visit is the archaeological site located in the spaces adjacent to the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, where a dedicated museum has been created enriched by a real underground path in areas that were part of the ancient Perugian acropolis.

Here sacred buildings and civil buildings have alternated over the centuries, with successive superimpositions from the Etruscan and Roman civilizations to the medieval one. The remains and the archaeological finds that are found there realize precisely the sediments that have accumulated over time and the rich historical heritage that they bear witness to.

Along the way you will come across in particular various medieval rooms, a Roman house with an annexed Etruscan-Roman road, Etruscan terracing walls.

For practical information on opening hours and visits to the museum, we refer you to our article dedicated to the Cathedral of San Lorenzo

Other sites of the Perugia Underground

We end the article by recommending some minor but equally interesting places among those concerning the Perugia subsoil.

Go to the Church of the Gesù in Piazza Matteotti, not far from Piazza IV Novembre in the heart of Perugia. This small, richly decorated church dates back to the 16th century and is distinguished by two peculiarities: the presence of an apse made up of three superimposed and completely frescoed Baroque Oratories, and the presence of suggestive underground passages that can be visited with private or group tours on set days and times. .

Another unique site of its kind in which to stop for a visit is a monumental work of hydraulic engineering from the IV-III century BC, the Etruscan Well of Perugia.

By reservation or on the occasion of special events, it is also possible to visit the Postern of the Conca, one of the access gates to the city during the Etruscan period, then reconverted and reused within the water supply system in the city. An integral part of the aqueduct in the past, today it consists of a tunnel that winds below the historic center, right below the cathedral.

<img class="" title="" alt=""
