As every year Bastia Umbra is ready to become an open-air theatre thanks to the Palio de San Michele, which this year will reach the “golden wedding” goal of the 50th edition, from September 15th to 30th, 2012. And you can swear that the four rioni (districts) of Bastia (Moncioveta – red, Portella – blue, San Rocco – green and Sant’Angelo – yellow) will compete in the three challenges of Sfilata, Giochi e Lizza.
To open the 2012 Palio de San Michele, at 09:30 of September 15th, 2012, the meeting for students at the movie theater Esperia called “Il Palio incontra la Scuola”. At 17:30 opening at the Church Museum of Santa Croce Museum of the photo exhibition “50 anni di passione“.
The four taverns located in the center of Bastia Umbra, where you can taste the typical Umbrian dishes, will open September 19th, 2012. The dinners will be enriched with animations, live bands and Djs till late.
The first challenge is planned, as is traditional in this Palio, from September 21st to 24th, where every night Piazza Mazzini host the Sfilate (Parades). The term has remained the same as in the 60s, when the floats paraded through the streets. Today they are some real plays, carried out by hundreds of people. The September 21st, 2012 is up to the Portella, on 22nd San Rocco, 23rd to Sant’Angelo and, last but not least, the 24th to Moncioveta. Starting at 22:00.
The September 26th, 2012 is the day dedicated to the second challenge, that of the Giochi (Games). That will be four: the tug of war; sack race; greasy pole; “Il muratore” (The mason). From 21:30.
The final challenge is scheduled for September 28th, 2012, 22:30 hours, when the main square is full of people from every corner. Four runners for each districts struggle between palpitations and chased in the Lizza, a 4 x 400m relay. At the end, based on the scores obtained in all the challenges, is delivered to the winning district the Palio.
