I primi offriranno i “Ceri”, i secondi i “Palii”.

The solemn Celebrazioni Benedettine (Benedictine Celebrations) in Norcia take place every year on March 20th and 21st, the day when all the Benedictine Communities commemorate the death of their founder, St. Benedict. But in the Valnerina’s town he is celebrated, of course, also in the day of his feast (July 11th) according to the Roman Catholic Church, since Pope Paul VI proclaimed the Saint as Patron Saint of Europe (1964).

One of the most important initiatives of the 2013 Celebrazioni Benedettine, just in the name of Europe, will be represented by the new journey of the “Fiaccola Benedettina Pro Pace et Europa Una” (“Pro Pace et Europa Una Benedictine Torch“), lighted up in a capital of the world (this year Paris: in 2012 Valletta, Malta, ed ) and then get to Norcia on the evening of March 20th, 19:30 hours.

On March 21st, 2013 beginning at 10:00, before the solemn religious ceremony at the St. Benedict’ Basilica, where it is exposed the Gothic reliquary of the Saint, the medieval Corteo Storico (Historical Parade) in honor of the Patron Saint, at San Benedetto Square.
The Parade draws its origins from the Antichi Statuti (Ancient Statutes) and subsequent Riformanze, still preserved in the Archivio Storico Comunale (Municipal Historical Archive). Sees to participate, with their wonderful costumes, the representatives of the 6 Guaite (current districts of the town: Porta Meggiana; Porta Massari; Porta Orientale; Porta Palatina; Porta Valledonna; Porta Narenula) and of the neighboring Castelli. The firsts offer the “Ceri”, the seconds the “Palios”.

Another event worth mentioning in the context of the 2013 Benedictine Celebrations is the Ancient Crossbow Tournament with the Balestrieri of the city’s Guaite, in the afternoon (around 16:00) of March 21st.
