Recalling a story of freedom, smuggling and emancipation.
In these two days, the Foundation for the Historical Museum of Tobacco Science and the Municipality of San Giustino, in collaboration with associations of the chief town and the population as a whole, will give back to life to what was once the smallest republic of the history thanks to the ability of its inhabitants, who, mind you, were not representatives of the nobility but simple expression of the common people, villagers and farmers what they knew how to take advantage of a banal error of re-demarcation among the Gran Dukedom in Tuscany and the Pontifical State.
Since 1441, no official recognition itself, but with the consent of the two neighboring states in question, citizens of the Republic of Cospaia self-proclaimed free, and they succeeded to remain such, with not inconsiderable diplomatic skills and the fruits of smuggling, until 1826.
Program:
Friday night: Holy Procession.
Saturday morning: Conference on the Republic of Cospaia.
Sunday morning: Walk on the border of the Republic.
Saturday and Sunday from 15.00 to 23.00: Tuscan cigar tasting, photography exhibition, games, traditional crafts, dinner, historical scenes of smuggling, theater, music.
