La Notte dei Luminari 2011

The "Notte dei Luminari", "Night of the Luminaries", to Monteleone di Orvieto repeats what has been imposed by the municipal statute of 1643, itself a reworking of code dating back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, if not before. The Chapter 50, Book I of the Statute, states that: "Every year the town will donate a five pounds candle to the Church on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul", co-patrons of the orvietano common.

And so the 28 June of every year, to the eve of the party of the saints, 60 walkers-on in fourteenth-century custom they put in scene the ceremony of offer of the votive candle to the religious authority from the civil authority.

The choice of the candle is not casual. In fact the wax, as the oil, was for instance a precious good in the 1300. The civil authorities, in this way, they handled the provisioning of the same one for the Church.
