La Rocca Maggiore di Assisi sovrasta la città offrendo un suggestivo panorama. Edificata sui resti di una cittadella romana o forse di un luogo di culto pagano nei primi anni del secolo XII, la fortezza è costituita da una cinta trapezoidale turrita e un cassero sormontato dall’alta torre del mastio.

Insieme alla Rocca Minore ha rappresentato uno degli esempi più emblematici dell’azione militare che il cardinale Egidio Albornoz compì in Umbria tra il 1353 e il  1367.

Documentata per la prima volta nel 1174, la Rocca Maggiore di Assisi venne costruita come castello feudale tedesco. In quegli anni ospitò probabilmente Federico II di Svevia ancora bambino, affidato alle cure di Corrado di Urslingen. Nel 1197 il futuro imperatore fu infatti battezzato ad Assisi, dove trascorse alcuni anni della sua infanzia. Un anno più tardi, durante i moti popolari indipendentisti, la Rocca fu distrutta dagli Assisani.

Soltanto nel 1356 il Cardinale Albornoz ebbe cura di farla ricostruire a beneficio del Papa riutilizzando le mura merlate esterne occidentali e parti delle mura interne. Nel 1360 si aggiunse la Rocca Minore, per difendere l’angolo nord-orientale delle mura verso il monte.

Al tempo di Pio II (1458-60), il Signore di allora, Jacopo Piccinino, fece costruire la torre poligonale a nord-ovest, collegata alla Rocca Maggiore da un corridoio fortificato.

Infine Papa Sisto IV restaurò il mastio nel 1478 e Paolo III fece erigere nel 1535-38 il torrione circolare vicino all‘ingresso.

Recenti restauri hanno reso possibile un’apertura alla roccaforte a scopo turistico e culturale. Questo austero e al tempo stesso magico luogo ben si presta ad ospitare appuntamenti culturali e musicali.

Per quanto della serie di passaggi segreti tramandati dalla leggenda si possa solo fantasticare, vale comunque la pena di visitare gli interni della Rocca Maggiore per poterne ammirare i suggestivi saloni dove sono custodite ricostruzioni tematiche ispirate alla vita medioevale.

La vista dalla sommità scoperta del mastio offre un panorama tra i più ampi e suggestivi di tutta l’Umbria: Assisi raccolta ai suoi piedi e la splendida Valle Umbra.

Between 1458 and 1460 a polygonal tower was built at some 300 ft from the main fortress and the two were linked by a fortified passage. The objective of this addition was to increase the defence of the side of the hill towards Perugia.

Coats of arms of popes and local lords were placed on various parts of Rocca Maggiore to celebrate additions and enhancements of the fortress.
