Description

La Scarzuola, a magical place out of time for getting lost yourself, hidden among the Umbrian hills

Come to experience the charming Scarzuola, the famous Ideal City realized in Umbria by the architect Tommaso Buzzi. Hidden among the green Umbrian hills, the Scarzuola is a real open-eyed dream. It is located in Montegabbione, a few kilometers from Orvieto (TR), a perfect place to spend a relaxing day.

ORIGINS AND HISTORY OF SCARZUOLA IN UMBRIA

Initially related to Saint Francis of Assisi, the Scarzuola seems to be related to a specific episode of his life. Near to Montegiove, Saint Francis built a cabin and he miraculously created a foutain, located exactly where he cultivated a plant called Scarza (that was the origin of the name Scarzuola). In 1956 the architect Tommaso Buzzi from Milan decided to buy the field around that cabin became a monastery. He had not a clear project and he had started the works of its ideal city after many years.

LA CITTA’ IDEALE DI TOMMASO BUZZI

For the visitors, the Scarzuola looks like a special itinerary, with many surreal and visionary elements. It is composed by 7 theaters, 7 settings and 7 monuments: Colosseum, Partenone, Pantheon, Arch of Triumph, Pyramide, Tower Bell and Tempio of Vesta.

The Ideal City of Buzzi represents a stone masterpiece inspired by the Monsters Park of Bomarzo, the Vittoriale of D’Annunzio, and also the optical illusions of Escher. All of this is immersed into a wonderful garden not to be missed!
