From December 28th, 2012 to January 1st, 2013 Orvieto will host the 20th edition (the first in 1993, ed) of the winter version of Umbria Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz Winter.
Among the Duomo, the Teatro Mancinelli, the Palazzo del Popolo, the Palazzo dei Sette, the Sala del Carmine, the Emilio Greco Museum and the "Al San Francesco" restaurant you can listen to the great protagonists of Jazz (and not only) as Kurt Elling, Gregory Porter, Dee Alexander, Gino Paoli, Paula and Jacques Morelenbaum, Pedrito Martinez, Pietro Tonolo, Flavio Boltro, Danilo Rea, Roberto Gatto, The Nashville Gospel Superchoir by Bobby Jones, the Quintorigo along with the son of Charles Mingus, Eric, with "Quintorigo plays Jimi Hendrix", Gegè Telesforo and many more.
First concert of Umbria Jazz Winter #20 starting at 16:00 on Friday, December 28th, 2012: at the Sala dei 400 of Palazzo del Popolo will perform the best students from summer seminars of the Berklee Summer School at Umbria Jazz Clinics, in a triple set with the quintet of Gianluca Pellerito and the young Sarah McKenzie, piano and voice. Admission is free.
At 18:00 street parade through the streets of the inner city with the Funk Off. The marching band, from December 29th until the end of the event, will open the days of the Festival (11:30).
The now usual Meeting Point at Palazzo dei Sette, non stop music with bar, snacks and wine bar, will open at 19:00 with Anaïs St. John & Her Trio. In the other days will open at 13:00 and the last concert of the Meeting Point will start at 01:00 (except New Year's Day). Among the protagonists of this space you also will find Rimbamband, Gegè Telesforo Nu Joy Band (and its new album), The Pedrito Martinez Group, Four Vegas, Kim Prevost & Bill Solley.
The Teatro Mancinelli will be the place dedicated to the hours 21:00's performances. With:
- Friday 28th and Saturday, December 30th, 2012 Dee Alexander & Evolution Ensemble feat. Tomeka Reid. Special guest Nicole Mitchell. Following Gregory Porter Septet;
- Saturday, December 29th, 2012 Paula Morelenbaum Cello Samba Trio, special guest Jaques Morelenbaum. Following 1619 Broadway - The Brill Building Project by Kurt Elling;
- January 1st, 2013, at 21:30, the historical monthly magazine "Musica Jazz" will award the best jazz artists of the year with the 30th edition of the "Top Jazz".
At Al San Francesco restaurant returns the "Jazz Lunch" and "Jazz Dinner" (13:00 and 21:00), combination of good food & wine and good jazz music.
At Capodanno, between New Year's Eve, the night of December 31st, 2012 and the morning of New Year's Day, January 1st, 2013, very rich bill. At 21:00 Grand New Year’s Eve dinner, with 2 possibilities of choice:
- at Al San Francesco Anaïs St. John & Her Trio, Gegè Telesforo Nu Joy Band and Gary Brown & Feelings;
- at La Penisola restaurant of Baschi, near Orvieto, Kim Prevost & Bill Solley e Four Vegas.
At 23:00, Expo Hall of the Palazzo del Popolo, Happy New Year!! with Funk Off On Stage and The Pedrito Martinez Group. At 01:00 at the Teatro Mancinelli Kurt Elling and Gregory Porter Septet. Same time, but at the Hall of the 400 "Gospel at its BEST" by The Nashville Gospel Superchoir, directed by Dr. Bobby Jones. At Palazzo dei Sette, from 01:00 Anaïs St. John & Her Trio; at 02:00 Rimbamband.
The Nashville Gospel Superchoir will be the protagonist of another fixture of Umbria Jazz Winter: Messa della Pace & Gospel (Mass of the Peace & Gospel), January 1st, 2013 17:00 hours, Duomo of Orvieto.
Will close the festival on January 1st, 2013, in addition to the 2012 Top Jazz, the End of the Festival Big Dinner at the restaurant Al San Francesco (from 21:00, with The Pedrito Martinez Group and Gary Brown & Feelings) and the Meeting Point, with the Four Vegas as the last band perfoming, starting at 01:00.
UJW #20, in the five days of the Festival, will prepare initiatives aimed at raising funds to support Orvieto's families and businesses tragically affected by the flood.
