CELEBRATIONS FOR THE HOLY WEEK

We’ll going to list the most famous and important religious events of the Umbrian Easter. Lion's share, of course, Assisi, the town best known for the same, considering the charm of the place, the intensity of the performances and the deep-rooted spirituality that characterizes this land. But even in Gubbio, Norcia and Cascia and surrounding areas Easter is deeply felt, with liturgies, processions and representations:

  • path of Holy Thursday in Assisi;

  • Good Friday in Assisi, with the 2 processions of the statues of the dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows, from the Cathedral of St. Rufino to the Basilica of St. Francis and return through, in the morning procession, the cloistered monasteries;

  • Great Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) at the foot of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, Assisi;

  • the other ways of the Cross on Good Friday. In Todi, Gualdo Tadino, Montefalco, Terni, Perugia, Gubbio, Orvieto, Spoleto and other towns is relived the Christ's martyrdom in the "Via Crucis" with a path to the Calvary, as for example in the borgo of Sigillo and Fossato di Vico, or the representation of the passion and death of Jesus through real tableaux as happens in Cascia, Norcia and in all the villages of the Valnerina;

  • the Messa del Crisma at the Cathedral of St. Rufino, Assisi;

  • the Scavigliazione, fourteenth century Ceremony. Also this one at the Cathedral of St. Rufino;

  • the Ora Santa in Bastia Umbra, at the Church of St. Rocco;

  • ancient rite of the Rinchinata in Cannara. At the Church of St. Matthew of Cannara, in the province of Perugia, be held the ancient rite of Rinchinata which resumed the meeting of the risen Christ with the Virgin Mary. From 2 churches begin 2 processions, one with a statue of Jesus, the other the Our Lady. When the 2 processions meet themselves a few meters of each other the  sculptures are made bow;

  • Vespertina Mass and procession of the Rinchinata in Bastia Umbra;

  • the Quadri Viventi (Tableaux) of Città della Pieve. The charming basement of Palazzo Orca, on March 31st and April 1st, 2013, will host the play, with about 40 walkers on, of the Quadri Viventi, the scenes of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ. The Quadri, 6, will be The Last Supper, The Garden of Gethsemane, The Ecce Homo, The Flagellation, The Pity on the Dead Christ and The Resurrection. Taking a cue from the Italian painting tradition of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries;
  •  Sacred Representation of "The Passion, Death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus" in Baschi, loc. Pantanelli. At the shrine of St. Angelo in Pantanelli every year on the evening of Easter Sunday, starting at 21:00, is staged a touring theatrical play, with 12 moving Quadri, which recall the last days related to the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The 105 actors of the artistic staff divided the show between the striking portico in front of the sanctuary and the woods below. In the cave where S. Francis of Assisi lived is represented the scene of the Resurrection;

  • Easter Monday of Assisi.
