Christmas in Umbria
The Umbria is one of the Italian regions by the oldest and most important historical, folk, religious and art tradition. Is no exception one of the most important holidays of the year, Christmas. Rewarding those who want to pass in an intimate, calm and cosy. But even those who do not make to stand still, and want to take advantage of this holiday season to admire far and wide the nature and the art of this beautiful Italian region. Without forgetting the pleasures of the table.
And the Green Heart of Italy breathes & transpires well the Christmas atmosphere. From the traditional Christmas markets, wich you can find from north to south, from east to west. Not only “Strenne” markets, but also crafts, hobbies, antiques and food & wine.
Numerous are also the Presepi, the Christmas cribs. And how could it be otherwise, given that they are "invented" by St. Francis of Assisi in Greccio in 1223? In Umbria there are of all kinds: from the one inside of a well, the Presepe nel Pozzo of Orvieto, to the Marcellano, Gualdo Cattaneo, living crib, who has earned to the small Umbrian town the nickname of "Umbrian Bethlehem"; from the seasons of the cribs like those of Massa Martana and Cascia to the “water” Nativity scenes, like the living crib of the Marmore Falls. Real works of art, worthy of a visit.
Christmas in Umbria are also concerts and carols. All the major towns of the region, such as Perugia, Terni, Città di Castello, Narni, Assisi, Todi, Gubbio, Marsciano, Cascia and Norcia, and related main churches, auditoriums and squares, hosts in December choirs, bagpipers, gospel, Gregorian chants and classical and/or chamber music. Beautiful places and engaging performances.
We want to talk about the lights? In addition to the illuminated streets of almost every village and town in Umbria, 2 installations certainly steal the scene, active by the Immaculate until Epiphany:
