2011 Donazione della Santa Spina nell'Antica Contea di Braccio Fortebraccio (Gift of the Holy Thorn in the Ancient County of Braccio Fortebraccio)

From 14th to August 21st, 2011, at Montone (PG) returns the "Donazione della Santa Spina nell'Antica Contea di Braccio Fortebraccio" (Gift of the Holy Thorn in the Ancient County of Braccio Fortebraccio), ​​the second annual exposition after the Easter Monday. The donation is sponsored by the "Italian National Commission for UNESCO".

The Holy Thorn is a very important relic, being a thorn from the crown of Jesus Christ. Legend has it that in 1473 the Conte Carlo de Fortebracci, general of the Serenissima Republic of Venice's militia, received the Thorn by the archpriest of the villa Tugnano, as a reward for his contribution in driving out the Turks by the Venetian borders. Back in Montone, he gave to the people the Holy Thorn, which was placed in the church of St. Francesco dei Minori Conventuali.

The week of the festivities will not only be historical-religious: the 3 Rioni (districts) of Montone (Porta del Borgo, Porta del Monte e Porta del Verziere) will compete to win the Palio. The Palio is in honor of the Castellana Margherita Castellana di Rimini, the wife of the Conte Carlo and regent of the medieval village in his absence: the Rione winner, the one with the highest score after the shooting with the bow and representations of scenes of medieval life, appoint its Castellana, previously chosen, Castellana di Montone. The three Castellane will be presented August 14th at 21:30 in square Piazza Fortebraccio. The archery contest is scheduled for Tuesday 16th, 21:30 at Parco della Rimembranza. Saturday 20th starts with a lecture entitled "Strutture economiche a Montone e nell'alta Valle del Tevere alla fine del Medioevo", at 11:00 at the San Francisco museum complex. At 13:00 and at the Cloister of St. Francis will be Ruminando! (ruminating!), Middle-age Vegetarian lunch. Cost 20 euros and reservations required.
