Giostra della Quintana (Joust of the Quintana)
Foligno (PG) annually hosts the Giostra della Quintana (Joust of the Quintana), annual historical event (revived in 1946 after a century break, ed) inspired by the medieval equestrian competition that will bring the city back to a time when women were "Dame" and men "Messeri".
The term Quintana refers to the fifth street of the Roman military camp, where usually took place the training of the soldiers that, armed with lance, they hurled against a puppet, commonly called "Saracino" (Saracen), trying to put on the ring suspended from a hand of the same.
The Giostra della Quintana is one of the best known and most popular horse races in Italian, so much to be referred to as "The Olympics of the equestrian competitions": ten riders representing the ten districts of the city, which on this occasion take on a "fake name" (the Ammaniti's knight is "The Vigorous", Badia "The Bold", Cassero "The Pertinacious", "The Furious" for Contrastanga, "The Faithful" Croce Bianca, "The Spirited" Giotti, "The Generous" La Mora, "The Bold" Morlupo, "The Black" Pugilli and "The Audacious" Spada), and compete in armor riding a horse, in order to insert the fateful 9 rings, 3 for each round. At each turn also changes the size of the ring, in descending order (10, 8 and 6 cm). The rider who manages to make the highest score wins the Palio della Quintana, that will be awarded after the competition to the "Campo de li Giochi".
The first race was held in June at night and is called La Sfida (The Challange), while the second takes place in the afternoon on a Sunday in September and is called "La Rivincita" ("The Rematch").
But the Joust of the Quintana is not only the Palio. In fact, the evening before the competition, an historical parade of 600 people in costume procession through the streets of the city. Not to mention the taverns, which will remain open throughout the course of the event.
