Feast of the Corpus Christi at Orvieto 2011

Like every year at the Feast of Corpus Domini, Orvieto lives on the solemnity of the ceremony, both religious and purely popular. The beginning is the parade of the Ladies, which proposes an imaginary cross-section of medieval life: the nobility of subject areas, in town to march in the parade, were followed by many dames and courtiers. And in honor of the ladies the Chief Magistrate organized representations to the streets, medieval dances to the songs, flag-waving from the performances to those of falconers, with the Palazzo del Popolo to make a frame.

The feast of Corpus Christi, which celebrates the miracle of the consecrated Host, was extended to the whole Catholic world by Pope Urban IV in 1264. The Holy Shroud of Corporal transported immediately after the miracle of Bolsena in 1263 from Orvieto, is shown every year since then to the faithful in a reliquary, in solemn procession.

The historical parade of Orvieto was born from the Sacred Performances of the fifties and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Italy. Consisting of four hundred figures, represents the history, culture and traditions of what was once a powerful medieval town.
The show is really fascinating: the background of the unique setting of the cathedral and the monuments of the historic center, the sound of drums and trumpets, you can admire the majestic gait of the figures, at ease in the role. Not to mention the precious costumes, banners and flags, armor and helmets, all created with meticulous historical research and the great skill of dressmaking, embroidery and craft shops Orvieto.

Saturday 25:

22.00 - Piazza Duomo - Arrival of the RELAY Prague - Bolsena - Orvieto - 5th edition - Relay Running with the torch carrying flights from Prague on June 19 and arrive in Orvieto, in the last stage of Bolsena-Orvieto. In the relay race involving some 20 athletes, half of the Czech Republic and the other half of Orvieto. The initiative points the way of the priest Peter from Prague to Rome, to deliver a letter to Pope Urban IV Ottocarro of King II. The priest, during his return journey, he stopped at Bolsena to celebrate St. Mass in the Church of Santa Cristina, where he showed the miracle of the Eucharist, the Pope, who was at that time in Orvieto, he carried the relic of the miracle in the city and ordered to establish the feast of Corpus Domini (1264).
