The characteristic Umbrian village of Monteleone di Spoleto is situated on a hill at 978 meters above sea level above the Corno river. It is appreciated most of all during the summer period, when many tourists go there in search of refreshment.
The town is of ancient origins, and used to be known as "Brufa". After having been destroyed in the 12th century, its fate almost always followed that of the Duchy of Spoleto, under whose dominion it has always remained. Nowadays, the livelihood of the village, which has less than 1000 inhabitants, is mainly due to its flourishing agricultural industry. The Clock tower, which used to be the portal of the old medieval castle, dominates the town. At a few meters' distance from there, you'll find the beautiful Bernabò Palace which dates back to the 15th century. The 14th century church of St. Francis is the town's most beautiful. Its interior is full of unusual movement: two naves situated on different levels and with different roofing extend in longitude, while a door will lead you to the cloister, which contains archeologicals artifacts and materials which were found in the surrounding area. Inside the church and the cloister, you'll also find 14th century frescoes and paintings dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Another noteworthy church is that of St. Nicholas, above all for its altar paintings which have been attributed to Ghezzi and Masucci.
