In 1250 the Terzieri are named for the first time in the Act of submission to Perugia when, after a short interval of autonomy and liberty due to the protection of the Emperor Federico II of Svevia, the antique Castel del Pieve was dominated from the city of the Griffon.
The final urban design dates back to the period of the Commune and has reached our days almost unchanged; this is characterized by a silhouette of the city that reminds under some aspects the one of the eagle walking in a threatening way towards Rome. The "Terzieri" have their origins from the subdivision of the medieval city in three pieces of land, the parts of the eagle are identifying themselves with the "Terzieri", who in return refer themselves to three social classes: to the head corresponds the "Terziere" Castle or Class of the cavaliers (Aristocracy), to the belly the "Terziere" Inside Borough (Middle class), to the flipper-queue the "Terziere Casalino" or Class of the Walkers (Farmers).
Nowadays the cavaliers of the "Terzieri" evocate the antique hunting of the Bull, challenging each other in the art of archery, touching silhouettes representing the "chianina" bull race fixed on mobile platforms. Every year, the historic parade is chaired by the group organized by the city administration, followed by the Maestro of scene, the Carry Gonfalon, the Symbols of the City and the Judges.
A parade of more than 800 personages: banner carriers, soldiers, nobles, ladies and cavaliers, people from the working classes and fire eaters are walking through the main streets of the centre, entertaining the spectators with games of prestige and ability. At the end of the traditional parade, arrives the majestic allegoric float which, inspired by the Classic Antiquity, walks through the streets of the city guided by companies of musicians playing renaissance melodies.
